Web Services – adopting standards
Posted by fwsi in Web Services on May 22, 2011
Web Services is built base on XML and Open Standards. XML is the data form language and the Open Standards are based on XML.
There are several area need to be standardised – basic messaging propocol and security in Web Services. SOAP is the standard used for the message protocol while WS-Security is adopted. W3C and OASIS are some of the standards organisation involved in developing respective standards. Interoperability issues are handle by WS-I.
Web Services is based on the concept of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). SOA paradigm proposed the concept of “build once and use many times” throught service orientation. Instead of building each application from scratch, the SOA approach is to assemble and configure whereever possible and build only when necessary. This ideal is not new but has evolved since the time of object orientated software design as components. Web Services can be viewed as an implementation of SOA.
SOA is about creating services that can be reused in multiple applications. The FWSI works focus on standardising the functionalities of common services needed across many Web Services enabled applications.

This blog is created to complement the main Web site (www.fwsi.org) to provide further information as well as to receive comment from the public regarding the works of this project.
The TC has completed it work and submitted to the OASIS for acceptance as a standard. The basic requirement to become an OASIS standard is to have three implementations. Only OASIS members organisation will be considered. So this project did not complete the standard round but remains as a committee standard.
There is much lesson to be learned in the standardisation process and lot of knowledge is gathered to prepare these documents. It is done over two years. While it never will become a standard but I hope that this project will provide some idea for those who are keen to implement Web Services.
If there are sufficient interest, we may revive the effort one more time.
